3rd Norwich Beer Festival, 1980

The 3rd Festival, organised by Terry Storer, ran from Tuesday 28th October – Saturday 1st November in St Andrews Hall, had over 70 beers from some 40 breweries on offer. A new brew from Ray Ashworth was launched called Wherry Bitter (whatever happened to that)! The only cider available was the delightfully named Cripped-cock from Somerset. The festival was opened by the then CAMRA National Chairman, Joe Godwin.

Food was available and entertainment was provided in the form of jazz and brass bands, games included yard-of-ale and darts competitions. The brass band was Aylsham Silver Band who performed Thursday and Saturday. A creche was provided in Blackfriar’s Hall until 8pm.

Entry was 50p including souvenir glass and was open pub hours except Saturday 10.30am to 5pm.

This year the festival had the first issued glass, known popularly as the green dragon glass. It used a Snap logo with a reverse CAMRA logo on a Nonic glass. It was also agreed to buy cheaply the glasses made for the first beer festival that were never delivered at the time due to a strike but only a sample were delivered and the rest were broken up at the manufacturers!
